Drinking a cup of coffee might seem like a good way to boost your energy levels, but experts warn it could have the opposite effect.
Coffee contains caffeine, a natural stimulant that blocks certain chemicals that make you feel tired. It also encourages your body to produce adrenaline that can speed up your heart rate and increase the amount of sugar in your blood.
But while studies show that consuming a small amount of caffeine can make you feel more alert — large amounts can make you feel anxious and have difficulty sleeping.
Caffeine can also reduce the quality of your sleep and affect how deeply you sleep, which can all increase your risk of daytime sleepiness.
So if you’re trying to boost your energy levels, it might be worth cutting down on caffeine — and remember it's not just in tea or coffee but also in cola drinks and chocolate.
Groups like the Royal College of Psychiatrists recommend that you stop drinking caffeine by mid-afternoon as the effects can last for up to 12 hours.
