You may have heard the terms ‘low-impact’ and ‘high-impact exercise', but what do they mean and which option is best for you?
Low impact exercises are activities that don't put too much pressure on your joints. These include swimming, cycling and walking.
High-impact exercise tends to place more weight on your joints, and both feet may be off the ground at the same time. Examples include football, gymnastics, basketball, running and tennis.
High-impact exercise provides a good aerobic workout (which increases your breathing and heart rate), helps build strong bones and often burns more calories. This makes it the better option if you want to lose weight.
However, if you’ve injured your joints, have a sports injury, have fragile bones or it's been a while since you've exercised, low-impact exercise like yoga or pilates may help you build fitness while minimising your risk of injury.
