International Self-Care Day: Here's your daily self-care checklist

Taking care of yourself is essential, but it can become difficult to make time for it when life gets busy.

Finding time to eat well, stay fit, monitor your health and reflect on your wellbeing isn't often as easy as you’d hope -- but we're here to help.

To mark International Self-Care Day, we’ve put together a practical checklist that should make it easier to fit a few self-care habits into your daily routine.

Try to complete all 5 steps today, and ask yourself how you feel. Then try them again tomorrow. They may become second nature before you know it.

1. Start your day with a healthy breakfast
Breakfast helps to set you up for the day. It’s also the perfect opportunity to take some time for yourself. Try making porridge, wholemeal toast or a smoothie to keep you fuller for longer.

2. Find time for 20-25 minutes of exercise
Exercise releases endorphins that can boost your mood. Research shows that staying active can also increase your sleep quality and energy levels. You could try a walk in a park, a brisk run or a cycle ride.

3. Drink plenty of water
Dehydration can affect your concentration and leave you feeling sluggish, so it’s important to try and drink at least 6-8 glasses of water every day.

4. Take a break when you can
It’s easy to get swept up in the hustle and bustle of daily life, but studies show that taking regular short breaks can help you to manage stress and improve concentration.

5. Get enough sleep
You need 6-9 hours of good quality sleep every night to keep your immune system strong, and take care of your mental wellbeing. Head to bed at a reasonable time, and follow these tips on getting a good night's sleep.
