The best foods to eat after exercise - and when

You may have heard that you should eat protein after a workout as soon as possible. This supposedly helps repair and build your muscle.

The truth is that protein alone isn't enough and you don’t need to race against the clock - unless you’re training several times a day.

So what should you eat and drink after exercising? And when’s the best time to do it?

Experts say that it’s best to focus on getting:

  • plenty of fluids to rehydrate your body. Water is best, but blending in a small amount of fruit juice can help to replace lost carbohydrates too
  • a good source of carbohydrate which is your body’s main source of fuel. Healthy sources include wholegrain bread, brown rice, fruit and wholemeal pasta
  • high-protein food to help repair and grow your muscles. Good options include yoghurt, milk, eggs, peas and lentils, oily fish or lean cuts of meat. Poultry like chicken or turkey is also a good source of protein

There's no rush, so try to eat a proper meal some time after your workout.

However, if that's going to be several hours away try having a quick snack before then.
