Smoothies and juices can be a good way to add more fruit and vegetables into your diet.
However, it's important to limit the amount you drink to no more than 150ml daily (1 small glass). This counts as 1 of your recommended 5 portions of fruit and vegetables per day.
You need this limit because when fruit and vegetables are blended, sugars are released. If you drink too many juices or smoothies, these sugars put you at higher risk of tooth decay.
To avoid this, try doing the following:
Drink juices or smoothies with a meal instead of on their own.
Try to use a mixture of fruit and vegetables in your smoothies to help keep the sugar content down — berries, citrus fruits, kiwi and avocado are all types of fruit with a lower amount of sugar, so combine these with vegetables such as spinach, celery or beetroot.
Try to add sources of protein (such as yoghurt or kefir) and fat (such as nuts or seeds) to your smoothies.
