Studies suggest that caffeine can boost your energy levels and improve endurance during exercise.
According to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, drinking caffeine before exercise could give you the energy to push your body harder and improve your performance. This is because it changes your perception of how much effort you're putting into your workout.
But it’s important to be careful. Caffeine is a drug that acts on your central nervous system, and drinking a lot of it can lead to symptoms of anxiety, an upset stomach or difficulty sleeping.
Try to limit yourself to 400mg of caffeine per day. As a guide:
The benefits of caffeine may also depend on the type of exercise you're doing.
People doing endurance sports, like long-distance running, tend to see more benefit than people doing resistance activities like lifting weights.
It's also thought that people who don't drink caffeine regularly may see more benefits of drinking it before a workout than people who drink it every day.
