How to stay safe and well during a coronavirus winter

As temperatures fall and you spend more time indoors, you may be wondering if you need to take extra precautions to protect yourself from coronavirus.

If you're socialising, it's still safest to do so outdoors. But if you plan to see friends and family indoors it’s all the more important to follow guidance on hand washing, wearing a face mask and social distancing.

Experts now know the virus can be spread by tiny particles in the air (as well as larger droplets), so if you invite people to your home, keep it well-ventilated, says Professor Linda Bauld, Professor of Public Health at the University of Edinburgh.

This means opening your windows to air out your home for at least some of the day — even if it’s cold outside.

Professor Bauld says this is especially important if the central heating is on as this dries out the air and may help the virus persist.

But if concerns about the virus mean you’re now socialising less, it’s just as important to look after your mental health. Professor Bauld suggests you:

  • connect with friends and family over the phone and online
  • try to eat a balanced diet
  • exercise regularly, even if it’s just a short, brisk walk
  • get up from your seat every half an hour if you’re staying in
