5 ways to keep your skin healthy under a face mask

Wearing a face mask helps to slow the spread of coronavirus. But wearing one can irritate your skin — especially if you have to wear it for several hours at a time.

If your skin has become dry, spotty, sore or irritated by your face mask, there are things you can do to help prevent this from happening.

Try to:

  1. Cleanse and moisturise your face twice a day — this will help keep your skin clean and hydrated. Avoid washing it more than this, as it can dry out your skin.
  2. Take regular breaks from wearing your mask — to prevent moisture from building up inside your mask and give your skin a chance to recover. Step outside or away from others to do this safely and experts recommend taking a break every 2 to 4 hours if you can.
  3. Avoid wearing make-up under your mask — it can clog your pores and irritate your skin. If you want to wear make-up, apply oil-free products or ones that are less likely to block your pores (non-comedogenic products).
  4. Make sure your mask fits — if your mask doesn't fit properly, it’s more likely to rub against and irritate your skin. Pick a mask that fits securely, but is comfortable.
  5. Wear a mask made from natural fabrics — if you have acne-prone skin, choose a mask made from a natural fabric like cotton that allows your skin to breathe.

You should also drink plenty of water during the day as this will help to keep your skin hydrated.
