Electrolyte test

Electrolytes are substances found in the blood, such as sodium, potassium, chloride and bicarbonate. An electrolyte test can help decide if there is an electrolyte imbalance.

The test is sometimes carried out during a routine physical examination, or it may be used as part of a more comprehensive set of tests.

As well as checking levels of electrolyte in the blood, an electrolyte panel can also be used to find whether there is an acid-base imbalance.

The test can also help monitor the effectiveness of treatment for an imbalance affecting the functioning of an organ.
